When one person does all the pet care: fixing the invisible load
The default caregiver problem isn't laziness — it's invisibility. Make the work visible with a shared log, and rebalance from data instead of grievance.

In most multi-person households, the pet has a default human — the one who notices the empty water bowl, remembers the flea treatment, and quietly becomes the household’s pet-care operating system. Ask anyone else and they’ll say care is “pretty much shared.” Ask the default human and you’ll get a different number.
Both are being honest. That’s the actual problem: the load isn’t just uneven, it’s invisible, so the household is arguing about perceptions instead of facts. The fix is to make the work visible first — a shared log where every action lands with a name — and only then talk about fairness. Data first, conversation second.
Why the load hides
Pet care is made of small, traceless acts. A walk leaves no artifact; a topped-up water bowl looks identical to one nobody touched. And the biggest share of the load isn’t even the doing — it’s the noticing: tracking that the food is running low, that the nail trim is overdue, that the limp is back. The noticing work is completely invisible, exhausting, and almost always concentrated in one person.
Invisibility also explains why “just ask for help” fails. The default human doesn’t want to become the household’s task dispatcher — that’s more noticing work, plus the social cost of assigning chores to adults. What they want is for the system to do the asking.
Make it visible before you make it fair
Skip the fairness conversation until you have a week of data, for two reasons. First, memory-based negotiations go badly — everyone’s recollection favors themselves, honestly and automatically. Second, the data conversation is easier: “the log says I did 19 of 24 tasks” is a fact on a screen, not an accusation, and it usually lands before it’s even spoken.
So: run a normal week where every feed, walk, scoop, and dose gets logged with a name. Don’t announce a study; just use the shared system as designed. The pattern will be obvious to everyone who can see it — and being seen is half of what the default human wanted.
Rebalancing that sticks
When the numbers are on the table, three moves work better than a grand chore treaty:
- Move whole responsibilities, not favors. “Evenings are mine now” survives; “I’ll help more” doesn’t — help is a loan, a role is a transfer.
- Transfer the noticing, not just the doing. Whoever takes evenings also owns evenings: the reminder goes to them, the pending task is their pending task. If the default human still has to prompt, nothing transferred.
- Let reminders be the dispatcher. A shared reminder that fires until someone handles it — then quiets for everyone — replaces the default human’s least favorite job with software.
Then check the log again in a month, casually. Loads drift back; visible loads drift back slower.
